Wicked has become the 8th-longest-running broadway show in broadway history after its 5,759th performance at the Gershwin Theatre on August 16th. It surpasses Mama Mia!, the previous 8th-longest-running show.
The show, based on the novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire, has been performed in over 100 cities and in 15 countries. It’s taken in nearly $4.5 billion with a global audience of 53 million people.
The production is an alternative view of what happened in Oz, giving audiences a glimpse of the tale from another angle. It tells the story of Glinda and Elphaba, who eventually become Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West. In 2014, the show earned 10 Tony nominations and won three for Costumes, Scenic Design, as well as Lead Actress.
